What a year has been so far!

We opened the doors to Stronghold only in April this year and what a journey it has been so far! We abolutely love the comunity we are building from the adults classes seeing our memebers, regular and new, pushing themselves to get better, faster, fitter, to our kids claases where the young ones are learning some valuable life skills all while having fun and making new friends, and last but definitely not least our yoga comunity.

The holiday season is a time for joy, togetherness, and creating lasting memories, so it was truly great to see so many of our members travel through for the first of many Stronghold social events.

Here’s to many more nights like this, where stories are shared, laughter is abundant, and our bonds as a community grow even stronger.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who's crosssed our doorstep this year and we are absolutely buzzing to make 2025 the best year yet, so watch this space!

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season and a bright, connected new year!

Hot yoga has gained immense popularity for its ability to combine traditional yoga benefits with the invigorating effects of heat. Conducted in a heated room—typically between 90°F and 105°F with controlled humidity—hot yoga amplifies the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of standard yoga practices.

Here’s why it might be worth rolling out your mat in a heated studio:

1. Enhanced Flexibility

The heat in a hot yoga session allows your muscles to warm up quickly, making it easier to stretch deeply and safely. A review highlighted that combining heat with stretching significantly improves range of motion compared to stretching alone. This is particularly beneficial for those looking to improve overall flexibility and mobility in their fitness routine.

2. Cardiovascular Health and Calorie Burn

Practicing yoga in a heated environment elevates your heart rate, akin to engaging in moderate-intensity exercise. A 90-minute hot yoga session can burn up to 900 calories. This makes it an effective option for enhancing cardiovascular fitness while promoting calorie expenditure.

3. Stress Relief and Mental Clarity

Hot yoga encourages mindfulness and deep breathing, which can activate the parasympathetic nervous system—helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation. A 16-week study confirmed that participants experienced significant reductions in stress levels when practicing hot yoga regularly, making it an excellent tool for mental wellness.

4. Detoxification

The profuse sweating induced by hot yoga aids the body’s natural detoxification process. While the skin is not the body’s primary detox organ, sweating can help remove small amounts of toxins, leaving practitioners feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after class.

5. Improved Sleep and Mood

Hot yoga can also positively impact sleep quality. Through its calming effects and regulation of stress hormones, it helps create an ideal environment for better rest. This practice has also been linked to reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression, as shown in studies focusing on its mental health benefits.

6. Safe Practices for Maximum Benefits

While hot yoga offers numerous advantages, it’s essential to approach it with care. Stay hydrated, know your limits, and listen to your body to prevent overstretching or overheating. Beginners should ease into the practice and consult a physician if they have conditions like hypertension or heart issues.

To dive deeper into the research behind hot yoga, you can explore studies such as those referenced by Live Science and True Hot Yoga, which detail the physiological and mental health improvements associated with regular practice.

Hot yoga isn’t just about heat—it’s about transformation.

Whether you’re aiming to improve flexibility, reduce stress, or simply try something new, stepping into a heated studio can be a rewarding experience for body and mind.

It's not been long now that we've started our kids classes at Stronghold and it's been amazing to see the rapid progress our young students are making in their self-defence skills. In the first class, many kids feel a bit unsure of their abilities, but within just a few sessions, we see their confidence soar, their physical coordination improve and their understanding of personal safety deepen. It's incredible to watch their growth, not just in skill, but in character.

Self-defence training is about so much more than learning how to physically protect yourself—it's about developing discipline, focus, and the mental strength to face challenges head-on.

At Stronghold, our classes are specifically designed to teach your child how to react quickly and effectively in potentially dangerous situations, while also building resilience, self-confidence, and respect for others. These values, instilled through martial arts, are the building blocks of success in every aspect of life.

Why is this so important?

1. Empowerment in a World That Can Be Unpredictable

As much as we wish it weren’t true, kids today face a wide range of potential risks, from bullying to more serious threats of physical harm. Teaching your kids self-defence gives them the tools to feel more secure and less anxious about the unknown. They learn how to stand up for themselves in tough situations, which boosts their confidence in everyday life. Self-defence is a skill set that empowers them, making them less vulnerable to intimidation or harm.

2. Building Mental and Emotional Strength

Martial arts training isn’t just about physical power—it's about mental resilience. In our classes, your child will learn how to stay calm under pressure, make quick decisions, and trust their instincts. These mental skills are incredibly valuable, not just for handling physical confrontations, but for facing the emotional challenges kids encounter every day. Learning self-defence also helps them develop patience and persistence as they work through drills and techniques, which translates to greater emotional maturity over time.

3. Creating a Safe Environment for Social and Personal Growth

At Stronghold classes are a great way for your child to connect with his or her peers in a positive, supportive environment. Through the practice of martial arts, they develop teamwork and respect, which strengthens their social skills and helps them build lasting friendships. The structured nature of the classes will give your child a sense of stability and routine, which can be especially beneficial in today's fast-paced world.

Ultimately, teaching children self-defence isn’t just about the moves—they’re learning how to move through life with confidence, respect, and resilience. We're incredibly proud of the progress we've seen in our young students so far, and we look forward to helping them continue to grow both as martial artists and as young people ready to face the world with confidence.

If you're considering enrolling your child in self-defence classes, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d love to show you firsthand how quickly they can start making real progress, and how this valuable training can benefit them for years to come.

National grading smashed

Some of the team ventured out today for the KMG Scotland national grading.

For some of the Stronghold team, this was their first time testing from P-G levels, and the team smashed it.

From new members that only started training a few months ago like Evan, already grading for his first P1 and showing what you can learn in a short time when you put in the effort, to someone like Alex, who's put in the hard work over the years and graded for the G1 level and getting a special mention at the grading, we are tremendously proud of all our students that show up, day after day, week after week and puotting in the work.

We absolutely love our Stronghold community! Here's to many more gradings to come!

Great effort by all

Well done to all the students regardless of clubs stepping on the floor to test. Putting yourself out there and stepping out of your comfort zone!

Had a visit on Saturday from Phil Munro @kmg_scotland director leading a session before tomorrow's national grading. Followed by getting the Stronghold massive together for some sparring 🥋

Having someone like Phil come in to teach is a fantastic opportunity for our students to get a different perpective, tips on what and how to improve and it's only going to make them better at their craft.

At Stronghold we always look at ways to bring as much value as we can to our students training, and the level of commitment and effort they put in, it shows, and is truly fantastic to see.

Let's go team!

Legendary night of classes at the Stronghold 🔥

First ever Kids Halloween party, followed by the Krav Maga and the Kickboxing - We also had some of the bros and PKA fight team come through

For the Krav Maga class we focused on levelling up the grappling and getting further details on the basics and finishing with live drills. Then onto the kickboxing getting the rounds in and going over the combo of the week 🥋

We haven't been open long so we have alot of new students and it's a privilege to introduce them to high level martial artists and give them the opportunity ask questions.

Thanks again to Martin, Jake, Paul and Talib

Only the beginning!

Truly, it's been a day

A perfect send off for a good friend and martial artist - beautiful to see how one man in his life had reached so many people and improved their lives for the better.

Driving to the gym, I had to get ready, tonight we had our Halloween kids class the first of many and what a madness 😂 Fun and chaos haha I think I enjoyed it as much as the kids 🤍

Then some of the PKA black belt massive came through. There had been suggestions Martin might come through but when Jake, Paul and Talib came to visit too. It made the night more special.

First time visit for the guys and just awesome to have them through. All black belts under the bold @punisheracademy and all blue belts under @gfteam_scotland they've all competed from regional to world level in various disciplines.

More than just solid martial artists but even better people.

I am grateful 🙏

A reminder please don't suffer in silence there's always a place here. Not just a club.

5 misconceptions about starting our classes at Stronghold 🏰

1️⃣ "I need to be fit to start" 🏃

Reality: Both Krav Maga and Kickboxing at Stronghold are designed to help you get in shape. Our classes cater to all fitness levels, and you'll build strength, endurance, and confidence as you progress.

2️⃣ “I need martial arts experience to start.” 🥋

Reality: Beginners are always welcome! Most of our students start with zero experience. Kickboxing and Krav Maga are great for people starting their martial arts journey, and you'll be surrounded by a supportive community.

3️⃣ “It’s too intense for me or I’m too old.” ⚡

Reality: Both disciplines are adaptable to your fitness level and ability. Whether you're a teen or an adult, the intensity can be adjusted based on your needs and goals. There’s no “too late” to start building your skills.

4️⃣ “I’ll be thrown into sparring right away.” 🥊

Reality: Sparring is not mandatory for beginners. At Stronghold Academy, you’ll first learn proper skills and drills to build your confidence before even considering sparring. Sparring is productive and partner preservation is a big part of training.

5️⃣ "I'll need to buy expensive kit before I start" ◻️

Reality: All you really need to begin is basic workout clothing and a positive attitude. At Stronghold Academy, we can help provide gloves for beginners during class. As you progress, you can slowly invest in your own gear, but it’s not a barrier to starting.

The anticipation of starting something new like joining the stronghold, and the doubts that might arise, soon get squashed once you arrive. The hardest part is taking the first step.

The only way to find out is to try!

See you at the Stronghold!

Skills, drills and an epic night at the Stronghold! 🏰🔥

Last night we had @mar.l.al visit the Stronghold black belt and champion from the bold PKA.

Kids class bringing the tempo and pace to kick off the evening, always fun and an absolute blast!

For the Krav Maga massive we covered entries to body lock takedowns and controlling someone on the ground.

Then straight into the kickboxing with the team, sparring, drills and a cheeky finisher with everyone getting after it!

The only thing better was the energy from the students, keen to learn with the effort to match!

Let's go!
